Talking Circles

New Earth Village Conversations

What is a talking circle?

A talking circle is a forum, a place to ‘talk’ to others in an online group by typing text messages that are visible to all group participants. You read what others have said, then reply with your own ideas. In time (perhaps hours or days), others read your message and some will answer you.

In this way, conversations (called threads) develop on all kinds of topics. Most talking circles have a specific focus (health, water, friendship, education, and so on); some are general; some are specific to a group of people (for example: men, women, youth or elders).

If I feel someone has made an offensive comment in a talking circle, what do I do?

Click on Report (bottom right) and follow the instructions. We’ll follow up and take appropriate action. If we agree with you, we’ll delete the comments.

The talking circle I want is not there. Will you create it?

Tell us your idea. We’re all ears. If we think it would appeal to others and if the topic is relevant to indigenous community development, consider it done.

How do I get to talk in a talking circle?

It’s this easy:

1.  Join New Earth Village:

Click Join (help menu at page top right), and follow the instructions to become a member.

2.  Sign in:

From any main New Earth Village page, click on 'Log in' next to the Help Bar at the very top. On the Log In page, type in the username and password you created when you joined.

3.  Find a talking circle

Once you've signed in, find a talking circle and a thread (topic) you’re interested in and start 'talking' (type your message).
