How wikis work

Detailed instructions for using a wiki are in the wiki itself. Look for the small yellow oval with the question mark.

Why not visit a wiki. Check out the demo wiki 'Fire Safety' in Explorer > Developer

Partnering in groups

What is a wiki?

A wiki is a place online where a group of people gather to work together on a project. Content can be developed right in the wiki or cut and pasted from elsewhere. All members of the wiki can edit (add or delete material) and see each other's changes. In effect, a wiki puts group members in the same room. You can see that wikis are a highly efficient way for people at different locations to work together.

On request, we will create a wiki for your group and place it in a Talking Circle related to your project . To access your wiki, you enter the Talking Circle it's associated with, then click on the name of your wiki. You can also request a Talking Circle to accompany your wiki, providing your group with a place to 'talk' about your project (see the demonstration wiki 'Fire Safety' in Explorer > Wiki).

Skype, the free internet phone service can be used along with your wiki to get together for project reviews (it's a wonderful New Earth out there folks!)

Why have a wiki?

  • Wikis allow many people with different skills, information and experience to work together on projects

  • By collaborating in wikis, the development time for new resources can be dramatically reduced

  • Normally, resource developers are obliged to work alone or with a small group of people in their communities. It can be difficult to generate new ideas and difficult to maintain the momentum for making things happen. A wiki can generate needed ideas and energy, and make the building of new resources fun, exciting and effective

  • Because wikis are visible to everybody, the material in them can be helpful to others, even as the resource is being developed. Once it's finished and made available in Storehouse - our resource library - it continues to inform others, adding value to the project that goes well beyond your own community

  • And participating in wikis is a great way to forge friendships in New Earth Village that may result in future project partnerships

How do we get a wiki?

To get a wiki for your project, call us or email us. Tell us the name of the Talking Circle it's associated with, the name you want for your wiki and if you want a Tallking Circle to go with your wiki. We'll create them and advise you by email.

How do wikis work?

In a wiki, any member can create content or change her own or others' content. You can create any number of linked pages in your wiki, in effect creating a small website. Members can create content in the wiki directly or cut and paste content from files on their computer into a wiki page.

Detailed instructions for using wikis are available in the wikis themselves. Look for the small yellow oval with a question mark inside. Click on it and instructions will appear.
