Home

In 2016 Jo decided to sell her Gorge neighbourhood house and move to Sidney, a half hour drive from Victoria. Sidney lies on the waterfront. It has one main street of small shops and in the summer. The lamp posts are festooned with colourful hanging baskets, the sidewalks busy with tourists enjoying the laid back atmosphere. The coffee shops have lineups to the door. AND Sidney is famous for its second-hand bookstores. Just the ticket.

The Ladies Housing Society was quickly incorporated (Val, Jane, Cathy and Randi) and, in short order, half of a brand new duplex was found. It suited her perfectly — small, modern, open area with a postage stamp garden and NO maintenance. Jo loved her house and she loved Sidney.

Jo On Life: FaceBook Wanderings

The Value of Humour

As hard as it might be, let’s try to hang on to this during these tough times! “There is nothing in the world so Irresistibly contagious as Laughter and Good Humour.”

This is totally obscene. While we struggle to keep or attract qualified medical practitioners society condones paying guys who can skate (or dribble a ball or run) disgusting amounts of money. And fans are complicit in this by buying tickets. $8;46 M for two years. Disgusting
Uhhh, who?

This headline, which was in newspapers across Canada this morning, is totally disrespectful to a man who made serving this country his life’s work. Olympic level athlete, Rhode’s scholar, and someone who served in Cabinet in various portfolios and The Canadian Press focuses on his tenure as PM of ‘just 79 days’ as the headline. You should be ashamed of yourselves. And you wring your hands as newspapers collapse and are seen as irrelevant in this time. Pfft Times-Colonist

The birds are busy in the garden this morning – lots of LBJs and hummingbirds flitting around. ❤

Herstory

Why do kids not learn about these women in school? Because it’s History and not Herstory (Agreed. Half of my female ancestors have one name. Peter)

Are people really that stupid?? I guess I just answered my own question. Pfft

No – not sure there is enough Kleenex in the world to get me through that film LOL

So wonderful to binge watch the last season of Modern Family. What a joy and a treasure that show was -especially during this horrid time. Going to miss them.

Yes, let’s not get too smug up here. First there’s the treatment of Canadian Indigenous peoples, then black people, and more recently the in your face racist treatment of Asian people since the pandemic started. Let’s look in the mirror…..

I beg you, PLEASE, PLEASE no more Pluto!!! ARG!!! Thank you LOL
This fuckwit is completely unhinged. If he’s not on medication then he should be. Chilliwack – wtf is the matter with you that you keep voting this idiot in as a freaking school trustee????

Top Of Mind
I wear my eye glasses on a granny string around my neck so in combo with the mask, sunglasses etc I just about strangled myself trying to use the Interac machine LOL

Once again another woman in our past with great accomplishments is ignored

Ah moving in. I still can’t find things LOL. WTF????

This also means eating seasonal so keep away from those cardboard tomatoes LOL

Love Farty Towels

Yay – more night time rain! Whoot
Book Bans

I remember when they un-banned Catcher In TheRye in the Chilliwack School District and we got to read it inEnglish 11. Loved it. Lots of book bannings in Chilliwack where there are more churches than common sense.

Covering the Map
I wear my eye glasses on a granny string around my neck so in combo with the mask, sunglasses etc I just about strangled myself trying to use the Interac machine LOL

Deadend Junction BC – best butter tarts in BC (aside from my mom’s of course) Thing was the size of my fist and loaded with raisins. Oh – I’m drooling….

Makes me crazy when I see dogs in the beds of trucks. Same with people driving with small dogs on their laps (air bag goes off = dead dog). Smarten up people.

Love hearing the fog horns this sleepy Saturday morning

Surprised myself by singing along (to a song on the radio?) and remembering all the words! Now it’s an ear worm and won’t go away. LOL

Yay – more night time rain! Whoot

I always say that stopping at stop signs is optional in Sidney By the Sea!

Round two – sautéed spot prawns, baked sockeye salmon filet and salad. Could eat this every night if I could afford it

More Memories

Caroline Rutter:

Thank you so much for the invite to the virtual wake for Jo-Anne.  Unfortunately the time difference makes it difficult for as it will be 2am here in Sardinia. We will raise a glass to Jo-Anne on Friday evening from the comfort of our home (we are currently under a curfew from 7pm). Condolences and love to you, all her friends and her family.  She was taken far too soon.

We only met Jo-Anne once, when she came to Sardinia with Val but she made a huge, lasting impression on us.  We became “virtual friends” from that time on and were very much looking forward to seeing her here again.  She had such a great sense of humour, a love of life and we felt that we had known her for years.

Go in peace, Jo-Anne, you will be missed and loved always.

Best wishes to you all,
Caroline and Richard Rutter

Jane Cowell:

When John and I moved to Victoria we were starting a new life and we didn’t know anybody here exceptJo-Anne and Dave. Before you know Jo-Anne and Dave had a big welcome party for us and we made many friends from that wonderful evening. Thank you Jo-Anne and Dave.
To  my wonderful , funny, smart , talented and irreverent dear friend. Show them how to knit up there will ya!

Kevin Will (Jo-Anne’s brother)

I’ve been racking my brain trying to come up with memories involving Jo-Anne when we were growing up. The one problem is that we are almost 6 years apart so she left home when I was 12 or 13. But I do remember when we had to move across Canada (dad was in the army) that we used to fight over which side of the car to sit on. She also used to complain to my mum that I was “breathing on her”. When a boy would call her and I would answer the phone I would yell out “hey ugly, it’s for you!” So they could hear it of course.
She saw me trying smoking with my friends and told me I shouldn’t do that and gave me a list of reasons. Ironically she smoked.
Here is one you will like, she moved out on her own and decided to invite the family over and she would cook supper. She made lasagna but she didn’t boil the noodles so it was a little crunchy.

Hi Bernice Sending big hugs your way. Thank you so much for this.

I just saw the picture of Jo and Kevin at your wedding. They both looked so happy (and young! When did you and Kevin get married?) She adored you (she called you an angel) and always said she could not imagine a better person to be her sister-in-law. We will all miss her so much.

Hi Val, Such a lovely message, all the photos bring back so many wonderful memories… ❤️ We married in 1989 and she was our MC. We had so many laughs as she attempted to pronounce the Dutch names for the out of town guests…

She became like one of my sisters, she was an honorary member of the ‘sistas’ and was truly a part of my family as well.
I am glad the LHS had a chance to meet and reminisce at Jo’s yesterday, must have been bittersweet. I hear you made one of her favourite dishes… love that!
Thanks for all of your groups help in cleaning out the freezer.
Her departure has left a big hole in many people’s lives, how lucky we all are to have known her… 💕
Bernice

Hi Bernice
Thank you for sharing the story about Jo MC ing your wedding. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when she was practising the Dutch pronunciations🥰
Yes, our LHS had a poignant time together in Jo’s nest yesterday. It felt good to help with the fridge and freezer, a concrete task to balance the emotional intensity…
Take care and sleep well. I look forward to Friday’s gathering and all the love and stories❤
Val
