Sardinia is an Italian island situated to the west of the Italian peninsula. Our Vancouver Island is about the same width as Sardinia (100km) but twice its length (460km vs 210 km). We know that the Bosa area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, although little is known about the original settlement. Some speculate Phoenicians first settled there. Under the Romans it was a municipium, a self-governing town which paid homage to Rome in exchange for protection. The present town of Bosa was founded in 1112 when the wealthy Malaspina family built a castle on a hill overlooking the Temo River, 3km from the coast.  Once Malaspina Castle was in place, the coastal village gradually moved to the shadow of the castle for protection. Bosa remained in the hands of the Malaspina family until the 14th century when it was taken over by the House of Aragon. Along with the rest of Sardinia, it was later ruled by Spain via royal marriage. How did we end up in Bosa?
